Oak Crest Awards Collegiate Scholarships to 31 Employees

Parkville, Maryland--Oak Crest announced the 31-member Student Scholars Class of 2017 at its 21st Annual Award Ceremony on March 29.  The recipients, all members of the Dining Services Department, earned four-year collegiate scholarships in the amount of $5,000.

In 21 years, $2.85 million has been awarded to assist 768 students to advance their collegiate careers, according to Stacey Schiano, Philanthropy Manager for the Erickson Living retirement community, during her campaign report.  More than $165,000 was raised during the 2017 campaign, funded primarily through resident contributions.

Mark Roussey, Executive Director of Oak Crest, noted the positive impact that the students have with residents and their fellow employees.

“With nearly one in six of our employees being students in Dining Services, their influence throughout our campus is meaningful,” stated Mr. Roussey.  “They serve our residents with energy, enthusiasm and a bright smile every day, and we are fortunate that these young men and women chose to share their lives with us at Oak Crest.  In turn, the generosity of our residents helps provide a pathway to success for these students to achieve their goals in life.”

Chris Fitzgibbons, currently a health care administrator in training at Oak Crest, provided the keynote address.  A graduate of nearby Perry Hall High School and the University of Baltimore with a B.S. in Business Administration, his career with Oak Crest began in 1998 in the Dining Services Department, eventually becoming a restaurant supervisor.  He received a collegiate scholarship from Oak Crest in 2001.

Ms. Betty Barker, a member of the Resident Advisory Council and Liaison to the Philanthropy Department, spoke on behalf of the 2,100 residents of Oak Crest.
