Beautiful Designs, Family Stories Highlight African-American Quilt Show at Riderwood

SILVER SPRING, MD---Some were passed from generation to generation, while others were recently made.  But there was a meaningful story behind each of them.
Riderwood, the Erickson Living retirement community, hosted an African-American Quilt Show on February 11th in the Chesapeake Room.  The event was sponsored by the resident-led Riderwood Quilt Club and the African-American History Club.
The showcase featured eighteen quilts contributed by residents.  The quilts utilized African fabric and/or were inspired by African-American history. 
Dorothy Sojourner, a resident, displayed a colorful nylon quilt measuring approximately 76" x 92" that she received from the family of her husband in the 1950's.  For Ms. Sojourner, the quilt represented "a welcome from my new family.  Whenever I see it, the word 'warmth' comes to mind."
Technology even played a role in the most recently-made quilts.  Resident Rebecca Griffin utilized photographs printed to fabric to design and create "A Second Term: Barack Is Back."  The hand-quilted piece features scenes from the current President's re-election in 2012.
Additionally, a documentary highlighting the inspirational history of the Gee's Bend, Alabama quilters ran continuously in Maryland Hall.
