Friends and family make Seabrook the clear choice

Personal referrals are a driver of new residents at Tinton Falls community

Good neighbors are worth their weight in gold. When you also count your neighbors as friends, it makes home just that much sweeter. Ann and Robert Herberg lived in the same home in Oceanport, N.J., for more than four decades. When they began to think about downsizing and where they’d like to live next, the first place that came to mind was Seabrook, an Erickson Living-managed community in Tinton Falls, N.J.

Ann taught second and third grade at Betty McElmon Elementary and Frank Antonides Schools for 37 years, retiring in 2010. Carolyn Cameron, a former coworker of Ann’s, and her husband Tom had lived at Seabrook for years, as had another former coworker, Barbara Kouri. Ann had been there many times to visit them. Her daughter-in-law’s mother also moved to Seabrook about two years ago.

“The stairs in my home were starting to get to me, and I thought it was time to take a closer look at Seabrook,” says Ann. “When I went to the sales appointment, I figured I would have to be put on the waiting list.”

As luck would have it, a first-floor apartment with two bedrooms, one-and-a-half baths, and a patio was available, and it was exactly what the Herbergs were looking for.

According to Seabrook Sales Director Dan Simms, word of mouth is a major source of new residents in the community. “People often come to Seabrook on the recommendation of friends or family, and many people in the surrounding area are familiar with the community because they know someone who knows someone who loves life at Seabrook,” says Simms.

Two weeks after the Herbergs made the move, another former colleague of Ann’s, Joan Kwiatkowski, and her husband Sam joined them at Seabrook as well.

A port in the storm

The Herbergs’ house sold within just eight days of hitting the market. They moved to Seabrook in April 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic was upending life as we know it across the country. While it was a challenging time to move, the Herbergs were grateful for all of the guidance and assistance Seabrook provided to make the process as smooth as possible.

An Erickson Realty and Moving Services staff member came to their home to help with complimentary coordination to determine which furniture they should bring with them to their new home at Seabrook and how it would fit as well as helped them select blinds.

The Herbergs used Teachers Moving, an Erickson Living-preferred vendor, and they were fully satisfied with the service. The movers were able to use a map drawn up by Erickson Realty and Moving Services to help set up the Herbergs’ furniture to their specifications.

After moving day, staff at Seabrook continued to assist them in getting adjusted to their new home. “Sales Counselor Dennise Baldwin was wonderful,” says Ann. “When we got Comcast internet and cable, she coordinated with maintenance to get it up and running that same night.”

Staying close to friends and family

Once they got settled, Ann and Robert began taking advantage of all that Seabrook has to offer. “We love the food,” says Ann. “We now have our favorite dishes.”

The Herbergs have been able to safely socialize with their friends by practicing social distancing outside on each other’s patios and in Seabrook’s Town Square Clubhouse living room. In addition to having good friends to spend time with and show them the ropes at Seabrook, Ann and Robert are also happy to be living near their two sons and five grandchildren in Wall Township.

“We wanted to make it easy for our children, so it’s really nice living so close to them,” says Ann. “We didn’t want them to have to worry about us, and at Seabrook, they know we are taken care of.”

While Ann initially was hesitant to part with some of her belongings while downsizing, she now likes living a little lighter.

“It was hard going through everything and cleaning out our home before the move, but now I really love my nest,” she says.

The Herbergs have set up their second bedroom as a guest room and are excited to have their grandchildren visit for a sleepover.

Sales Director Dan Simms says many people move to Seabrook each year after learning about the vibrant retirement lifestyle from a friend or relative. “A resident who is happy in our community will share and want others to enjoy life as they do,” Simms says. “Many people know their friends have certain standards for living and appreciate their confidence in the community.”
