Poet Laureate of Kansas Wyatt Townley Inspires Tallgrass Creek Residents

OVERLAND PARK, KS (October 26, 2015) -- Wyatt Townley, Poet Laureate of Kansas, visited Tallgrass Creek October 19 to present “Coming Home to Poetry” as part of her poetry readings to 68 organizations across Kansas.

Townley inspired residents with her advocacy of the humanities as a public resource for all Kansans through public presentations and discussions about poetry in communities across the state.

Her appearance was arranged by Tallgrass Creek resident Judy Turner, who said Townley’s love of poetry is contagious. Residents, for instance, are now sharing their poetry books with one another as a result of listening...

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- A simmering pot of homemade chili will warm up any occasion which was evident Friday, October 16, when teams of Tallgrass Creek staff members competed in a spirited, chili cook off. As deciding voters, residents flocked to the community's Sunflower Room to taste the competition's 13 crock pots of chili, each representing a different department at Tallgrass Creek.

Tallgrass Creek Sinatra Look-a-Likes Celebrate His 100th Birthday

OVERLAND PARK, KS (October 15, 2015) -- Max Evans won a Frank Sinatra Look-a-Like contest held today at Tallgrass Creek retirement community. The contest celebrated Sinatra's 100th birthday.

Evans moved to Tallgrass Creek from Des Moines, Iowa, and is a former farm manager and agricultural appraiser. He won bragging rights as being the day’s honorary “Chairman of the Board” in Kansas.

Contest participants were George Lund, Lynn Brown, Max Evans, Dave Thomson, and Jim Graham. They sang Sinatra’s hit song “Come Fly with Me.”

Tallgrass Creek Honors, Supports People Who Have Alzheimer's

OVERLAND PARK, KS (October 5,2015) – Tallgrass Creek retirement community residents today participated in an ‘Alzheimer’s Honor Walk & Roll’ on their 65-acre campus to remember people who have the disease and to pledge support for them.

Seventy-five residents gathered on the community’s front lawn and then walked along marked paths. As each resident walked through an archway they used a megaphone to speak the name of the person who they were honoring.

The residents were given lavender balloons, which they released as a group upon the conclusion of the walk.

OVERLAND PAK, KS -- A Wednesday, October 15, ‘Frank Sinatra Look-a-like Contest’ will be held by residents of Tallgrass Creek retirement community in Overland Park, KS, to celebrate Sinatra’s 100th birthday. The contest will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the community, 13800 Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.

Each contestant will wear a Sinatra-esque fedora hat and lip-sync to Sinatra’s signature song “New York New York.” He will display his best Sinatra swagger and style.

Tallgrass Creek Residents Set Monthly Cookie Baking Record to Help Feed the Homeless

OVERLAND PARK, KS (September 14, 2015) – Tallgrass Creek retirement community residents set a monthly record in August when they baked a total of 2,502 cookies for volunteer Marcia Merrick’s work to provide lunches for homeless men, women and children in Kansas City, Missouri.

They shattered their previous monthly record of 2,000 baked cookies. The residents bake more than 21,000 cookies annually as part of this community outreach project in which they have been involved for the past four years.

OVERLAND PARK, KS (July 13, 2015) -- Matt Chatfield has been named the new Executive Chef for Tallgrass Creek retirement community in Overland Park, KS.

Some of Chef Matt’s former positions include Executive Chef at William Jewell College, The Culinary Center of Kansas City, Brandon Woods Senior Living, and Brookridge Country Club.

He completed his Chef Apprenticeship through nationally recognized Johnson County Community College.
