Senior living community comes together to enjoy music, friends and fun

Overland Park, KS – January 3, 2020 – At Tallgrass Creek, a senior living community developed and managed by Erickson Living, residents enjoy a vibrant, active lifestyle. With dozens of resident-run groups and clubs and an array of convenient, on-campus amenities, there are numerous opportunities to engage with neighbors and pursue personal interests.

Throughout the year, a committee of resident volunteers work in partnership with the community's professional Resident Life team to organize special events. The gatherings are designed to bring neighbors from across the community together to share their diverse backgrounds and get to know one another.

Something new

Earlier this fall, the group hosted Tallgrass Creek's first-ever Karaoke Night for a crowd of nearly 100. With help from on-staff audio-visual professionals, they transformed Tallgrass Creek's bistro to provide room for a stage with sound throughout the space.

The event was such a hit that at the very next committee meeting, they immediately scheduled another Karaoke Night, this time a holiday edition during December, which recently took place.

"I had never seen a karaoke event before, but it turned out to be a huge success," said Bill Converse, a member of the committee who helped to organize the event. "I think everyone had a lot of fun. Karaoke was something new and different, which I think people enjoyed."

Healthy living

Events like these help to support Tallgrass Creek's integrated approach to health and wellness, incorporating all seven dimensions of health. Especially for seniors, socialization is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. The ability to relate to and connect with other people and maintain positive relationships can help to improve their overall quality of life.

For example, in addition to singing karaoke and volunteering on the committee, Bill heads up Tallgrass Creek's Ukulele Club and attends monthly lectures as part of the community's Great Courses program, providing opportunities to socialize while learning something new.

"I didn't play ukulele or sing before I moved here," says Bill. "Now, I've been singing for about three years. It has been great to try new experiences."

That includes karaoke, he says.

"We get so many compliments about Karaoke Night," says Bill. "We're thinking about making it a quarterly event."
