OVERLAND PARK, KS (March 8, 2013) - The Zumba fitness craze has come to Tallgrass Creek in Overland Park, KS, and residents are not about to stop it anytime soon.
Zumba is sweeping the nation. Many health clubs and community recreation departments offer Zumba. While Zumba classes differ from club to club and instructor to instructor, all classes use Latin-inspired music and have a dance party atmosphere.
The Zumba classes at Tallgrass Creek began this month are already are filled to near capacity because of Zumba's popularity. Zumba Gold, which is offered, takes place on Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the classroom/music room. Beth Wells, a certified Zumba instructor, conducts the classes.
"Zumba Gold is a low impact aerobic exercise that was the missing piece to what is offered here at Tallgrass Creek," said Michael Hernandez, Fitness Specialist. " The majority of the classes that had previously been offered -- including Stretch and Tone, Core Exercise, and Chair Exercise -- emphasize strength training, balance, and coordination , but they do not have a core focus of aerobic training. That's where Zumba comes in. It's a fun, aerobic, and 'spicy' exercise program that will help improve cardiovascular performance."
At its core, Zumba is a cardio workout which burns calories and improves cardiovascular fitness. Zumba can improve muscle tone and strengthen the body. Zumba is also a great stress reliever. The sweating, dancing, and occasionally shouting involved in Zumba will release stress and tension in a person's body, according to Hernandez.
Zumba was created by Beto Perez in the 1990s. It started as a fluke. One day Beto showed up to teach a group fitness class and did not have his aerobic music. Quickly improvising, he pulled out some of his favorite personal music, Latin with a dance beat and got his class dancing. The class was so much fun that it was a smashing success. The Zumba program today is being taught at more than 90,000 locations in over 110 countries.
In addition to Zumba the following fitness programs are offered to the 300 residents of Tallgrass Creek: Core Exercise, Yoga, Tai Chi, Water Exercise, Arthritis Exercise, Balance Exercise, and Strengthening Exercises. Hernandez also provides personal training and fitness center orientations.
"My classes get a lot of exercise within 30 to 45 minutes," said Hernandez. " At the same time, we laugh, joke, tell stories, catch-up, and share health related news from the local and national news outlets.
My classes offers more in terms of "Total Wellness" than a straightforward, no nonsense, exercise class," he said. "Zumba will be a little more structured than that, but I can already tell the residents love the pace of the class."
