Tallgrass Creek’s Summer Concert Series Enhances Residents’ Vibrant Retirement Lifestyle

Outdoor musical performances popular at Overland Park retirement community

Overland Park, KS – September 4, 2019 – This year, Tallgrass Creek, a continuing care retirement community developed and managed by Erickson Living, introduced a Summer Concert Series for residents. The outdoor musical performances proved to be quite popular, drawing large crowds of residents to the grassy courtyard nestled in the center of the 65-acre campus.

This summer, residents enjoyed a variety of musical styles, including Dixieland, jazz, blues, country, and classic rock. Among the crowd favorites were acts by local performers, including the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra Trio and The Penni Lawrence Band, a country quartet. All performances are conveniently held just steps away from residents’ maintenance-free apartment homes.

Karen Keenan moved to Tallgrass Creek two years ago and currently serves as Chairman of the community’s Entertainment Committee. “I have thoroughly enjoyed sorting out the bands, researching and listening to the demos, and getting to know the band members,” she said. “The bands have mentioned that they love watching the crowd and the response. It warms their heart to see audience members smile. We have been fortunate to find and experience a lot of great talent. It is a thrilling and socially interactive time shared with our neighbors. The positive chatter continues post musical events with residents eagerly awaiting the next scheduled entertainment.”

“In addition to the outdoor atmosphere, residents enjoy fellowship with their friends while dancing, drinking wine, eating ice cream and listening to live music,” said Janette Magee, Manager of Resident Life at Tallgrass Creek. “Each concert provides a different atmosphere that makes for a unique experience. Residents are eagerly anticipating the next performance.”

For residents Wes and Judy Geer, the concerts have been a highlight this summer. “We really enjoy the outdoor concerts with the bands,” said Judy. “The variety in music is great; we especially love Country! We are really looking forward to The Recliners returning back in September; my sister knows one of the band members!”

On September 16, 2019, local classic rock cover band The Recliners will return to Tallgrass Creek by popular demand after performing at the community’s “Music Under the Stars” event last summer, which celebrated the addition of new outdoor living features for residents, including a beautiful pergola and patio area.

Tallgrass Creek residents benefit from an array of outdoor amenities, including walking and biking paths, gardening areas, a dog park and a putting green. In addition, indoor conveniences such as a music room, woodshop, fitness center with personal trainers, all-season swimming pool along with game rooms and classrooms provide space for the dozens of resident-run groups and clubs to gather and explore a diverse range of interests.

“We look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for residents to enjoy live music throughout the fall and winter months, indoors of course,” said Magee. “Our residents love music, dancing and enjoying each other’s company.”

Tallgrass Creek resident George Lund certainly agrees: “I have really enjoyed the Summer Concert Series thus far; I think I can speak for most residents when I say this! I am looking forward to attending the next performance and beyond!”
