Sometimes a new life is just around the corner literally. For Howard and Kathleen Becker, their new life was waiting for them just six miles south of their single family home in Silver Spring. However, making the move to their new home at Riderwood was not quite as easy as packing a moving van. Once they made the decision to move, they knew that the best way to make it happen was to join the community s priority list. In August 2007 they put down a fully refundable deposit to reserve their place in line for the apartment of their choice. "We knew a number of people living here at Riderwood already," says Mrs. Becker. "Many of them were part of our Bible study [group]. As a result, we were very familiar with the community and decided that it was the place for us." Eight months after joining the priority list, the Beckers were offered an apartment and moved to their new home on June 24, 2008. Investment for the future "The Beckers were ready to move, and joining the priority list enabled them to do so as soon as possible," says Riderwood Retirement Counselor Sally Sager. "But it s important for people to know that an impending move is not the only reason for joining this growing list. "Our priority list is filled with people preparing for a move years from now. It s both a wise and safe investment for the future. If you don t want to move, you don t have to, and you won t lose your place in line." Settling in Since moving to Riderwood, the Beckers have put their love of music and singing to good use. He sings with the all-male Balladeers, and she sings with Grace Notes. As associate members of Riderwood s interfaith church, they both also sing in the choir. "We both love to sing and are so happy that we have opportunities to do so here," says Mrs. Becker. As they embark on their first full year as members of the Riderwood community, the Beckers couldn t be happier. "Every day we meet new people; it s wonderful," Mrs. Becker says. "We enjoy our neighbors as well as the staff. We ve been so impressed with Riderwood s response to people s needs and problems as they arise. It really is remarkable. We really enjoy living here."
