John Erickson ready for the freedom years

By Mark Abromaitis

Baltimore, Md. JohnErickson, the namesake and founder of Erickson Retirement Communities, recently stepped down as chief executive officer of the company he founded 26 years ago.

I m trying to take some of the same advice I give to our residents, Erickson says with a laugh. We always encourage them to enjoy life and get the most out of their freedom years, so I m going to do the same.

Long-term vision, leadership

Erickson, who founded the Baltimore, Md. based company in 1983, has turned over the CEO reins to Bruce R. Rick Grindrod. Grindrod was previously president of Erickson Developing Enterprises, the company s business development arm that oversaw the company s exponential growth over the past 15 years.

Grindrod has been with Erickson since the first community, Charlestown, in Baltimore, Md., opened in 1983. He has served in a myriad of positions, including executive vice president of operations and executive director of Charlestown.

Communities that celebrate life

The commitment we have to share our gifts to create communities that celebrate life will continue to be this company s foundation. I remain steadfast to our vision to bring the Erickson lifestyle to as many seniors as possible.

Erickson, 65, will still serve as chairman of the company, which manages more than 20 retirement campuses around the country. Erickson Retirement Communities was named to Fortune magazine s top 100 Best Places to Work list in 2008. In 2009, Erickson moved up to
