Don’t underestimate the power of the door

When Salome Wiloth put her old house on the market, she learned that even the smallest of details outside a home can play a huge role in whether it sells. My real estate agent immediately suggested I paint my weathered front door, Wiloth says. It sounded like a good idea, so I took her advice and even let her pick out the color. But once it was done and the paint dried, it seemed like an off shade of red. Something was just wrong. It didn t match the brick on the house, but I forgot about it and let it slide. Well after the decision was made, plenty of people continued to look at her home, but she just couldn t sell it. So Wiloth decided she needed another change. After speaking with Personal Moving Consultant Kate Dukes, she switched to a Wind Crest-recommended real estate agent and took a second look at the color of the front door. Dukes said the door seemed to stick out like a sore thumb. Mrs. Wiloth had done everything right her home was well staged, uncluttered, in beautiful shape, and had great amenities, including hardwood floors and recently painted bedrooms. It shouldn t have been that hard to sell, says Dukes. But that front door needed to be painted another shade. Wiloth took Dukes advice and tried a simple black for the front door to complement the home s shutters. About a week later, the house sold. I imagine it all came down to that front door, Wiloth says. Almost a week after we repainted the door a better color, it sold. She adds, It is important to make a good first impression. I had been in my home for 44 years and it was well maintained, but with that front door, it wasn t getting the attention it deserved. Need Help? Erickson Realty & Moving Services can help you!
