After last winter s infamous Snowmeggedon, Donald and Harriet Hunt decided to leave their Falls Church home of more than 32 years for an exciting new life at Ashby Ponds. The help of Erickson Realty and Moving Services made the move seamless and stress-free. We were originally on the Priority List at Greenspring [an Erickson Living community in Springfield], says Mrs. Hunt. We even went with a friend to an informational luncheon before we turned 65. When we learned that Erickson Living was building a community in Ashburn, we followed the news closely in the Erickson Tribune. Our oldest son lives in Leesburg, and we liked the idea of being close to him and our grandchildren. Our next step was deciding when to move, she adds. Then last year s big snow hit. I think that s what did us in. After dealing with it all ourselves, we decided to make our move. The couple chose a two-bedroom, two-bath home with a screened-in porch. In preparation for their move, they were introduced to Erickson Realty and Moving Services.

Full range of services

We were ready to take all the help we could get, says Mrs. Hunt. First, Elizabeth McCumiskey, Ashby Ponds personal moving consultant, came to visit us in our home. She brought along a list of recommended real estate professionals. We chose one from Long and Foster who also lived in Falls Church and knew our area well. Both McCumiskey and the Hunts real estate agent provided the couple with staging suggestions ways in which they could make their home appeal to a wide variety of buyers. Erickson Realty and Moving Services variety of buyers. Erickson Realty and Moving Services coordinated the pulling up of old rugs to expose sought-after hardwood flooring and the removal of wallpaper. Many of the Hunts walls were painted in neutral colors and personal photographs and knick-knacks were packed for the move.

Successful sale

The effort paid off. The couple s house sold in 19 days with settlement in a mere 30 days. We were thrilled, says Mrs. Hunt. The last thing we wanted was to move to Ashby Ponds with the burden of still having to sell our house. We couldn t have asked for a better outcome. Once the house was under contract, the Hunts then turned their attention to downsizing and packing. Again, Erickson Realty and Moving Services stepped in with pairs of helpful hands. We worked with Jane, Ashby Ponds downsizing expert, says Mrs. Hunt. I told her she was my Rent-A-Daughter. She was so helpful in getting us ready for our move. We designated items to sell at our church s yard sale and gave away other possessions to a number of charities, including the Purple Heart, Vietnam Vets, and the Salvation Army. On July 28, 2010, the Hunts were well prepared for their move to Ashby Ponds. We were so glad that we opted to use the Erickson Realty and Moving Services moving company, says Mrs. Hunt. They did a wonderful job. And because they consistently work with Ashby Ponds, they knew the lay of the land where to park, what elevators to use. The couple was also impressed with how effective and efficient the unpacking went. We had three women come for five hours, and they did a lot of work for us, Mrs. Hunt continues. They unpacked, put our pictures on the walls, and completely put together our kitchen. The kitchen was so well organized that I haven t changed a thing.

Settled in for the holidays

Now, preparing for their first holiday season in their new home, the Hunts couldn t be happier. Our living room/dining room area is almost the same size as in our old house so we ve been able to keep all our same furniture, says Mrs. Hunt. Our granddaughter says it looks just like home. And I finally have a walk-in closet. I ve never had one before and can t believe what I was missing. Since moving in, Mrs. Hunt has begun playing the piano for weekly services at Ashby Ponds Interfaith Church, and the couple continues to meet their former Falls Church neighbors for social bridge. We also enjoy traveling with friends of ours who live in North Carolina, she says. We take trips with the Elderhostel Road Scholar program. We also go to Florida regularly to see our three-year-old grandson. Now that we live at Ashby Ponds, it is so nice to just tell security we are leaving and to know everything will be safe. I guess that really sums up what we like about our new life at Ashby Ponds the ability to do the things we enjoy without worrying about the responsibilities of a house. We re having a great time!
