From the time Howard Hoffman arrived at Maris Grove on April 1 until the time he left after lunch, he d shed 75 pounds. Actually, he d shredded 75 pounds unwanted magazines, club and association mail, and bank records dating to the 1970s. It was a big load off his mind because the following week the Hoffmans moved from their Wilmington, Del., home of 45 years to the Erickson Living community in Glen Mills, Pa. The annual Big D event is a special perk for priority list members people who make a $1,000 completely refundable deposit to save their place in line for an apartment home of their choice at Maris Grove. Big D stands for donate, discard, dine, and discover. And make no mistake Big D is a Big Deal.

Big day

Participants began stockpiling their donations and discards months in advance in anticipation of this one-stop, drive-through downsizing opportunity. Held outside in the parking lot at Maris Grove s Cardinal Clubhouse, the popular event gathered together local companies and organizations eager to accept the cast-offs. Folks with towels, linens, or bedding; household items; and building supplies or tools drove right up to one or more local charities and delivered their donations. The Hoffmans headed to the big shredder truck, popped their trunk, and watched as their paperwork was loaded into the shredder, staples and all. They shred it very quickly and for free, Mr. Hoffman says. If I take it to other places, they charge about a dollar a pound.

From shredding to selling

The event couldn t have been timelier. A number of participants listed their properties for sale the following week. We recommend, whether people are looking to move a month from now or five years from now, that it s never too early to start downsizing, says Suzanne McAllister, Maris Grove s personal moving consultant with Erickson Realty and Moving Services. When we assist in this way and make it easier, it supports everything we do to help folks keep moving forward and get to this carefree, healthier lifestyle. Attendees sampled that lifestyle during the dining portion of Big D. They enjoyed a complimentary buffet lunch in Cardinal Clubhouse and mingled with their future neighbors and staff at the Glen Mills community. They also learned they could save thousands on a Maris Grove apartment home through special incentives available only that day a decidedly delightful discovery.
