Q: I don t eat nearly as much as I used to and worry about getting enough vitamins. Should I take a supplement?

A.The recommended amounts of many vitamins and minerals are similar for both older and younger adults. But many older adults don t eat as much as they used to because the need for calories tends to decrease with age. That means you have to get the same amount of nutrients from less food. The way to do this is to eat smarter more colorful vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean meats can pack a lot of nutrition into a small amount of food. For many people, health conditions or medications can affect the body s ability to absorb essential nutrients, and their need for certain vitamins and minerals can be affected by surgery, illnesses, or injuries. Before starting any supplements, talk to your doctor about what type of vitamins or minerals you may need.
