Excess hair on upper lip and chin

Created date

July 26th, 2011

Q: I m a 70-year-old woman in good health. As I ve gotten older, I ve noticed excess hair on my upper lip and chin. My skin is very sensitive, so what s the best way to remove it?

A: In some women, facial hair can start appearing after menopause. This is due to hormone changes, particularly a reduction in estrogen and progesterone. There's really no way to prevent it, but there are many options for disguising or removing it, including shaving, tweezing, waxing, bleaching, laser treatments, and prescription creams that slow hair growth. Your sensitive skin may tolerate some of these treatments, but others may cause irritation. See a dermatologist for an evaluation and treatment options.
