How to sell a house people will fight over

Moving program helps Virginia couple enjoy bidding war

I was so surprised by how quickly our house sold, says Marge Cruse, who lives with her husband, Donald, at Ashby Ponds, an Erickson Living community in Ashburn, Va. As soon as we put it on the market, we had two offers. I didn t think that happened anymore. Thanks to the help Marge and Donald received from Erickson Realty and Moving Services, the couple was able to successfully sell the Arlington, Va., house they had lived in for 43 years. For a few years prior to our move, we knew we wanted to live at Ashby Ponds, Marge says. We put down a deposit and attended several information sessions. That s how we learned about the services available to us. Once the Cruses made the decision to move forward with their move, Personal Moving Consultant Elizabeth McCumiskey visited them in their home, offered suggestions, and provided a list of hand-picked moving resources. Elizabeth was wonderful, says Marge. One of her first suggestions was to use the real estate agent who ultimately sold our house. Former neighbors of ours had also used the same agent for their move to Ashby Ponds eight months earlier.

Bidding war

Not only did the Cruses real estate agent help them sell their house, but by making a few suggestions, including replacing kitchen countertops and repainting some of the rooms, a bidding war for the house ensued. We never imagined that would happen, says Marge, but it turns out that two families really wanted our house. In the end, it worked out really well for us. With the sale of their house complete, the Cruses turned to McCumiskey for suggestions on reputable moving companies. I have a very big, 72-inch breakfront with lots of glass, says Marge. I was very concerned about moving it, unharmed, into our new home. But the way our movers packed, there was no way it would crack. They really did a terrific job.

Reaping the benefits

On St. Patrick s Day 2011, the couple moved into their apartment home and couldn t be happier. We really enjoy living here, says Marge. Everyone we meet is friendly and helpful. I like to spend time in the [on-site] library and Donald is eager to try his hand in the woodworking shop. Moving to Ashby Ponds was a great decision for our future.
