Tallgrass Creek Home Run Derby a hit

Created date

August 23rd, 2011

Nothing says summer like a day at the ballpark. In July, staff and residents at Tallgrass Creek created their very own field of dreams with a Home Run Derby contest. Dozens of athletes from the Overland Park community competed, proving that age hasn t slowed them down one bit. Each competitor got five swings at baseballs pitched by staff members, and those who hit the farthest advanced to a playoff round. Tallgrass Creek Fitness Specialist Michael Hernandez, who works with residents in the on-site fitness and aquatics center, says the contest was an opportunity for people to test (and show off) their athletic abilities. The contest really worked great. Everyone had fun and that is what it s really about, Michael says. This event also gave people a chance to see where they actually are physically. Aside from the chance to get some exercise on a beautiful July morning, the event also provided an opportunity for residents and staff to bond over America s favorite pastime. The fun-filled day included all of the trappings of a baseball game. The Tallgrass Creek choir kicked off the competition with The Star-Spangled Banner, fans cheered on the batters, and everyone munched on popcorn and peanuts.
