At age 66, Cathleen Turick decided to embark on a new chapter in her life. She wanted to be closer to her family, so she moved from her native New Jersey to Kansas, where her daughter, son-in-law, and three-year-old grandson reside. Cathleen says she had been living in a small house in New Jersey and researched several retirement communities in preparation for her relocation to Kansas. She ultimately chose to move to Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Living community in Overland Park a decision she says was easy to make. These Erickson communities are just so much livelier, Cathleen says. There are so many talented people here writers and artists; it s all very stimulating.

Meeting like-minded people

Just a few short weeks into her new life in Kansas, Cathleen already feels right at home. She says the variety of clubs, activities, and special events at Tallgrass Creek has made it easy to get involved and become acquainted with her new neighbors. She says she s been making a point to have dinner with different people each night when she dines at Tallgrass Creek s on-site restaurant. Cathleen has already joined the community s nature club and the book club, and this fall she plans to go back to school by taking advantage of continuous learning courses that Tallgrass Creek offers in conjunction with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kansas. The on-site class this autumn will focus on the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein a topic Cathleen says she is thrilled about. When you do things that you enjoy, you meet like-minded people and I have, Cathleen says. You really get to know people when you see them several times a week. Plus, Cathleen says, the move to Tallgrass Creek has been good for her health. The community s on-site fitness and aquatics center makes it convenient for residents to stay in shape. I am taking better care of myself, she says. I m doing six group fitness classes a week, and then I go out and walk every morning to walk off the wonderful desserts we have at night.

Jersey girl in Kansas

At the same time, Cathleen takes advantage of opportunities to become better acquainted with her new home state. She s already found a new church, and she recently signed up for a bus trip to visit Topeka. I am pushing my comfort zone, she says. I ll always be a Jersey girl, but I want to assimilate into Kansas. Of course, Cathleen s favorite thing about living in Kansas is the reason that brought her there in the first place her family. She s already surprised her daughter and grandson when they were at a toddler gym class, and she looks forward to being nearby as her grandson grows up. She s already planned regular Friday night date nights with her grandson. He ll spend the night with grandma at Tallgrass Creek and his parents will enjoy a date night of their own, Cathleen says. I m still working out a routine, but I am having a lot of fun.
