When Barbara Kouri started encountering maintenance problems with her house, she worried about who would be fixing the issue and possibly feeling unsafe around a stranger. I was afraid of something going wrong with the house. You never know who s going to be coming in to fix it or how much it s going to cost, she says. With her husband gone, she also felt alone despite living in a family neighborhood. She began looking at alternative options.

Ideal living

Barbara discoveredSeabrook, an Erickson Living community in Tinton Falls, N.J. With 24/7 home maintenance, two restaurants and a caf , a medical center, classrooms, a fitness center, and more than 120 clubs and activities, Seabrook seemed to fulfill everything she was looking for in a community. But it wasn t until she moved in that she learned how much happier she would be. I came not knowing what to expect, she says. What I found was a wonderful place to live. Barbara moved into a one-bedroom Brighton-style apartment home, which she says more than meets her needs. With a full kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, and a washer and dryer, It s ideal for me, she says. I felt I didn t need a bigger apartment because I m not just getting the apartment, I m getting the whole place: libraries, walking trails, classrooms, restaurants. Barbara takes full advantage of all her new home has to offer. She s learned mah-jongg, billiards, canasta, and email. She volunteers at the nearby Mahala F. Atchison Elementary School and local food bank. She goes to Seabrook s on-site fitness center three days a week. And she loves taking walks around the community in good weather or bad, thanks to glass-enclosed walkways that connect every building. Though she still sees her outside physician, she rests easy knowing she can visit the on-site medical center in emergencies. It s been great. There s no sitting in the waiting room for hours, and the pharmacy is so convenient, she says. She also takes care of preventive measures like shingles and flu shots at Seabrook s medical center. I haven t found any community that offers what they offer here, she says. I feel safe and secure, and you re never alone; there is always something to do and someone there to help you.

Healthier checkbook

Aside from all the amenities, Barbara, a retired teacher, especially appreciates the affordability of her Seabrook home. I find that it s more affordable living here than in a house. In a house, something is always going wrong, she explains. At Seabrook, all home maintenance is included in each resident s monthly service package, which also includes use of all amenities, one meal a day in any of the community s restaurants, security, and all utilities except telephone. So instead of managing several regular bills a month, in addition to unexpected costs like a broken water heater or high winter heating bill, Barbara writes just one monthly check. As a result, My checkbook is healthier here than it was in my house, Barbara says. Overall, Barbara says enthusiastically, I would highly recommend Seabrook to anyone who s in my situation, who finds themselves alone, because you re never alone here.
