No reason to wait

Rosedale woman trades aging house for maintenance-free lifestyle

What if you could sell your house quickly and move into a maintenance-free home on 87 landscaped acres without even spending a dime on moving expenses? That s exactly what Joan Chojnacki did last summer when she decided to trade her four-bedroom house in Rosedale for her new, one-bedroom patio apartment home at Crest, an Erickson Living community in Parkville, Md. I joined the Oak Crest list a few years ago after attending a luncheon with a friend, says Joan. Last year I finally reached the point where my house was becoming too much physically and emotionally, so I decided I would make an appointment to see exactly what my options were. But Joan wasn t prepared for just how easy it would be. Her house wasn t even on the market when she discovered that the one-bedroom patio apartment she desired was available immediately. With her house of 53 years becoming more and more of a burden, she decided there was no reason to wait. I considered what it would cost me to maintain and upkeep the house over the next few years, she says. I would have to hire someone to mow the lawn and trim the trees; I needed a new sidewalk; the driveway needed to be blacktopped. I wanted to get out of my house and start living the way I wanted.

Leave it to the experts

Any worries she had instantly vanished once Joan realized she had the full support of the Oak Crest sales office and Realty and Moving Services. The Oak Crest sales team was marvelous! says Joan. They went to work right away and recommended a wonderful real estate agent. Then Ashley Ruth, their moving consultant, came out to the house and offered advice on things I could do to help my house sell faster, she says. Six weeks later, Joan s house sold as she was having the finishing touches put on her new apartment home at Oak Crest. I had one of the walls partially removed to open up the kitchen and create a breakfast bar, says Joan. I just love it. I was able to select my carpet and paint colors, and I also purchased a new chandelier for the dining room which was installed for me before I moved in. Thanks to Oak Crest s Move On Us program, not only were the renovations on Joan s new home free of charge, her entire move didn t cost her a dime. It didn t cost me anything to move here, says Joan. I received $2,000 toward my moving costs for using a real estate agent and mover that Oak Crest recommended. I couldn t have asked for it to be any less stressful than it was.
