Title

Musical pair tunes up their life at Ann’s Choice

In 2010, when an illness kept Bob Sabb from pruning shrubs and singing in the chorus of the 55-plus community where he lived in Toms River, N.J., his wife Dot started thinking about the future. I thought we should move to a retirement community, she says. Ann s Choice, in Bucks County, Pa., seemed like the perfect fit. It s near their daughter, has an on-site medical center, and features maintenance-free living. It also offers a wealth of activities and services, and amenities that include six restaurants and an all-season swimming pool and fitness center. The Sabbs moved in February 2011. I m very happy with my decision, Dot says. It takes a big burden off you. You only have to worry about your life; you don t worry about your property.

That s entertainment

The Sabbs make a good team, both as marriage partners and for the past seven years as a musical duo. When the instructor in Toms River said I had a decent voice and Dot encouraged me, I bought some instrumental CDs and an audio system, says Bob. He and Dot began performing at Toms River senior centers and nursing homes. He crooned his Songs of Sinatra and Friends, and Dot cued up his CD accompaniment. Now they perform primarily at Ann s Choice, and someone else lugs their equipment. Community resources staff arranged to store their big speakers in the Village Clubhouse music room, and housekeeping staff transports their equipment when they perform. Bob and Dot s first performance at Ann s Choice took place in the Village Clubhouse lounge where neighbors gather before dinner at Fireside Restaurant. Since then, they often perform to benefit the Ann s Choice benevolent care fund, a campus charity. The couple s holiday show, in the on-site performing arts center, benefitted the fund. They also entertained on campus at a children s Christmas party in Banners Caf and performed at a holiday breakfast for one of the men s clubs. Additionally, they ve entertained visitors and residents during Ann s Choice marketing events.

Home sweet home

Home base for Bob and Dot is an elegant Harrison-style apartment home. Dot chose it because its corner location and many picture windows fill it with light. But also, she says, there s plenty of closet space, and the washer and dryer are right in the apartment. The floor plan complements the Sabbs carefree lifestyle. Bob divides his time among his new friends, a good game of billiards, and his music. He memorizes new lyrics in the couple s ample second bedroom, which doubles as their guest and computer room. Dot enjoys mingling with her neighbors at campus-wide events, and she loves cooking up delectable dishes in their eat-in kitchen. Last year she made Christmas dinner, complete with turkey and all the trimmings. I wanted the memory of cooking the holiday meal in my new home, she says, even though they and their friends and family had several choices on campus for holiday dining. She also baked her holiday specialties: 14 fruitcakes from her family s Civil War-era recipe and 18 date-nut cakes. She earned rave reviews when she gifted thick slices to her neighbors. At Ann s Choice, Bob and Dot say they are enjoying life their way.
