Charlestown’s major makeover to reflect today’s active retirees

Created date

July 24th, 2012
Charlestown Sales Director Don Grove enjoys the long, leisurely days of summer just as much as the next guy, but this year he can t wait for the temperatures to turn cold. That s because this winter the Catonsville-based community will unveil its first new apartment homes in over a decade with ten never-before-seen floor plans. Everything about these homes will be brand new: from the appliances, to the amenities, to the new custom finishes, and more, says Grove. Many include benefits like extra walk-in closets, second full baths, and expanded living rooms and that s on top of the other great features that have put our traditional two-bedroom homes in such high demand.

Home improvements

The community s newly renovated Edgewood residence building will have one-bedroom, one-bedroom with den, and two-bedroom apartment homes with features like granite countertops, tile flooring, open concepts, and stainless steel appliances, as well as new screened-in porches for select apartments. The residence building, which overlooks a beautiful wooded area and courtyard, is centrally located near the soon-to-be renovated Terrace Room Caf and auditorium where community members will be able to watch movies and attend live theater and musical performances. The new apartments are part of an ongoing effort to modernize the 29-year-old community to better meet the needs of the active people who live there. We commissioned a market study back in 2008 as part of a strategic plan for repositioning the campus to address the needs of baby boomers, says Jim Walters, director of strategic planning at Charlestown. As a result, Charlestown will offer some of the most modern and best equipped retirement living apartments in the Baltimore area. The concurrent modernization and expansion of the Charlestown Square Clubhouse, including greatly expanded fitness and swimming facilities, we hope will also strongly appeal to the next generation of active, fitness-oriented residents.

Healthy outlook

The Charlestown Square Clubhouse will grow from 35,000 square feet to over 55,000 square feet, featuring a larger computer lab and hair salon, an expansion of the market with a new caf area, additional new classrooms, and a new banquet room. As more and more residents recognize the value of health and wellness activities, this priority is also reflected in the design of the new clubhouse at Charlestown. The new fitness center will triple in size to include more space for cardio and strength-training equipment, a studio for group classes and expanded locker rooms. The modernized aquatics center will feature a 30- by 75-foot pool with a larger deck area for activities and a hot tub. A green roof, or living roof, which is covered in plants and reduces storm water run-off and lowers cooling costs, will also be installed on the aquatics center. Charlestown is also expanding through technology providing prospective residents with the chance to view their future home on a computer screen. The Charlestown Virtual Selection Experience is a program that offers viewers a 360-degree panoramic view of an apartment home and other areas such as restaurants. This online tool gives clients the opportunity to get a feel for what they are purchasing while offering comfort and convenience during the decision-making process. The virtual tour can be viewed at ericksonliving.com/ourcommunities/cci. Over the years, Charlestown has attracted thousands of active retirees with their worry-free lifestyle and world-class amenities, says Walters. We hope these changes will bring enhanced vitality and energy to the campus, making Charlestown a richer environment for the people who live here and an even more appealing destination for newcomers.
