With the right help, Maryland couple’s move is smooth sailing

For the better half of their married life, John and Carol Swope enjoyed living on or near the water. But when the hassles of house ownership began to dampen their dream, they decided to trade in their four-bedroom for something less labor intensive. There was a lot to take care of when it came to mowing the lawn, trimming the bushes, and working in the garden, and then in the winter there was the snow, says Carol. So in 2010, the Essex, Md., couple decided to sell their house in the WaterView community they called home and move into a maintenance-free apartment at nearby Oak Crest, an Erickson Living community in Parkville, Md. For help they turned to Personal Moving Consultant Ashley Ruth, and the rest was smooth sailing. We had visited the community a few times and joined the priority list, says Carol. Once we were ready to move, we selected a real estate agent from the preferred vendors list Ashley provided and ended up selling our house in about 52 days. Ashley also assisted John and Carol with planning their new apartment home at Oak Crest. She came out to our house to take measurements of our furniture so we could decide what items we would keep, says Carol. Come moving day, John and Carol sat back and let the movers (also recommended by Oak Crest) do all the heavy lifting. The movers used the diagram Ashley had made and put everything exactly where it was supposed to go, Carol says.

All settled in

In no time at all, the active couple was settled in. I like that I don t have to cook if I don t want to, says Carol. Instead, we just go to one of the on-site restaurants where we have prime rib every Thursday and I m going to have steamed shrimp tonight. According to Carol, John has discovered a passion of his own. John says he always dreamed of having a woodshop like the one here at Oak Crest, she says. Each winter the snowbirds head south to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with their 36-foot fifth wheel. We just close the door to our apartment and leave without any worries, says Carol.
