It’s that time of year again. Resolution time! One resolution that many people will make and break this year is to get healthy. Luckily, there is new technology out there to make managing your weight easier than ever.

Apps to track your day

Experts will tell you that one of the most effective ways to lose weight is to track your food intake. Having a smartphone makes this easy. LoseIt is a popular app that you can download for free. It has been featured on CNN, The Today Show, and in the New York Times. LoseIt lets you set a weight loss goal and then provides a daily allotment of calories. Food items are added into a food journal—the program calculates the calories from the meal and then automatically subtracts it from the allotment. Calories can even be earned back, if the user perfoms and enters in physical activity. This can help with better portion control and smarter food choices. LoseIt is only one of hundreds of weight loss apps available, and most have similar features. Search the app store on your smartphone to find one that fits your needs.

Online help for watching your weight

If you have not made the jump to a smartphone yet, or if you simply prefer the computer, there are several websites that provide a similar service. Sparkpeople.com is a free site that allows users to enter both food and physical activity. Sparkpeople has free meal plans, challenges to keep you motivated, and advice from weight loss experts.

Weight Watchers, an established and successful weight loss system, has taken its program online. Weight Watchers Online is perfect for people who are too busy or choose not to go to the weekly weigh-ins. It can also be used as a supplementary tool for members who are more comfortable with the traditional program.

Work out smarter

iPods, smartphones, and other digital music devices can make your workouts fly by. Load them with your favorite music or customize different playlists to fit cardio, strength training, or even yoga workouts. You can even watch your favorite shows! Many cable companies have free apps for current subscribers. Netflix also has an app where users can stream their favorite shows straight to their phone. Nike even has a device that inserts directly into your Nike shoes to track runs. This workout can then be instantly shared with friends or kept private so the user can track his or her progress.

There’s really no excuse for not staying healthy this year. Technology makes maintaining a healthy weight effortless. So get out there, and make this New Year’s resolution one you don’t break!
