Attention, snowbirds

Warm up to these sweet services

When the weather outside is frightful, many retirees head south to enjoy warm temperatures and sunny skies. But maintaining two residences comes with more than a few negatives, from physical home maintenance to doubling your financial burden. Vera Corcoran has lived in Florida for 20 years. Three years ago, she moved to a one-bedroom apartment home at Seabrook, an Erickson Living community in Tinton Falls, N.J., to be closer to her daughter and take advantage of the on-site medical center. Even though she still spends time in Benita Springs, Fla., she can balance her time and finances thanks to Seabrook s snowbird services.

Home sweet home

When Vera visits Benita Springs, she leaves all her worries behind in Tinton Falls. Seabrook s round-the-clock security ensures her home and belongings are as safe when she s gone as when she s there. And if anything should happen to her home while she s away, Seabrook maintenance technicians will repair it as part of her monthly service package. She won t have to lift a finger, open her checkbook, or board a plane. Her spacious, one-bedroom apartment will be just as she left it when she returns in April.

Convenient billing

Adding to Vera s peace of mind, the finance department has created convenient services for snowbirds or others who travel for an extended period of time, says David Muth, director of finance at Seabrook. During residents extended time away, the finance department can forward their monthly statement to their home away from home, to a family member, or to both. Some residents opt for the convenient automatic payment plan. Residents can specify an account, and their monthly service fee will automatically be paid on or around the 20th of every month. Finally, if residents time away includes the end of January, when 2012 property tax statements arrive in the mail, Seabrook will forward the statements to residents second homes.

More than money

I like Florida right now because it s 80 degrees outside and sunny. But my daughter lives in New Jersey, and I moved to be near her, Vera says over the phone from Benita Springs. Despite Florida s sunny skies, Vera says she values the health and lifestyle benefits Seabrook offers. She takes advantage of the on-site medical center and enjoys her low-maintenance, one-bedroom apartment home.
