When the weather outside is frightful, many retirees head south to enjoy warm temperatures and sunny skies. But maintaining two residences comes with more than a few negatives, from physical home maintenance to doubling your financial burden. Vito Delisi has lived at Cedar Crest, Erickson Living s community in Pompton Plains, N.J., for nearly 11 years. I have a beautiful two-bedroom, two-bath apartment home [at Cedar Crest], he says. I ve loved it from the beginning. He also owns a condo in Dearfield Beach, Fla., where he and his late wife visited ever since they moved to Cedar Crest. Vito has continued to head south for three to four months a year, from January to April or May. We started going because my wife really liked Florida, and I m keeping it going, he says, adding that Cedar Crest s snowbird services and security make it possible for him to keep his Florida home.

Home sweet home

When Vito visits Dearfield Beach, he leaves all his worries behind in Pompton Plains. Cedar Crest s round-the-clock security ensures his home and belongings are as safe when he s gone as when he s there. And if anything should happen to his home while he s away, Cedar Crest maintenance technicians will repair it as part of his monthly service package. He won t have to lift a finger, open his checkbook, or board a plane. His spacious, two-bedroom apartment home will be just as he left it when he returns in May.

Convenient billing

Adding to Vito s peace of mind, the finance department has created convenient services for snowbirds or others who travel for an extended period of time, says Heather Devine-Hansen, accounting office coordinator. During residents extended time away, the finance department can forward their monthly statement to their home away from home, to a family member, or to both. Some residents opt for the convenient automatic payment plan. Residents can specify an account, and their monthly service fee will automatically be paid on or around the 20th of every month. Finally, if residents time away includes the end of January, when 2012 property tax statements arrive in the mail, Cedar Crest will forward the statements to residents second homes.

More than money

While Vito says he ll continue visiting Florida as long as he s able, I never think of moving out of [Cedar Crest], he says. Why should I? It s as good as any five-star hotel. What more could I ask for? During his eight months a year at Cedar Crest, Vito volunteers in the on-site TV studio, working behind the camera. He enjoys time with friends and utilizing the many amenities Cedar Crest offers. It s more than money, he says. It s a wonderful place to live.
