Katherine and John Young are well-acquainted with moving and decorating new homes. I worked in the Foreign Service, and John was in the international petrochemical business, says Katherine. We relocated a number of times, so I had plenty of opportunities to try new d cor. The couple moved to Highland Springs, an Erickson Living community in North Dallas, when it opened in 2006. At the time, Katherine opted for a southwest theme when she was choosing paint colors and fabric swatches. Last year, around our six-year mark, I started to feel it was time for a new look, says Katherine. We re not moving from Highland Springs, so the logical choice was to redecorate. Katherine contacted Linda Allegro, the community s custom interiors coordinator, to help her with the interior redesign. Linda was wonderful to work with, says Katherine. Anyone who s ever undertaken a decorating project knows you have to visit many different stores the paint store, the fabric store, the light fixture store. The list can be endless. Linda brought all those samples to my apartment.

An eye for design

Allegro, whose previous work experience includes Ethan Allen and Robb & Stucky International, has more than 20 years of design experience. She began working at Highland Springs two years ago, decorating the community s model apartments and helping residents with their interior design projects. My design services are complimentary for our residents, says Linda. They pay for the cost of materials and labor. I have samples of just about everything in the custom interiors office granite, tile, fabric, paint. I bring whatever the resident wants to see to our consultation.

Start with a plan

Allegro says she meets with each resident at the outset of a project to discuss the overall vision. When Katherine contacted her, the two sat down to plan a new look for the master bedroom. I shared my ideas, and Linda refined them within the realm of possibilities, says Katherine. She has a real gift for knowing what works and what doesn t. She s attuned to the scale of our apartments, and she s got a fantastic sense of how the lighting will affect paint colors. With the design plan in place, Allegro arranged for contractors to do the work. I interview every contractor that I send into residents apartments, says Allegro. I make sure they meet our requirements and they understand Erickson s expectations of respect and courtesy. It gave me peace of mind to know that we had a trusted crew working in our apartment, says Katherine. That s another benefit of working with Linda. I didn t have any concerns about the contractors she used.

Customer service is key

Outstanding customer service is key at Highland Springs, not just in custom interiors but across the community. Creating an exceptional experience is our number one priority, says Executive Director Chris Emmett. We strive to make Highland Springs the best place to live and the best place to work. For Allegro, that means that every job ends with a satisfied client. My goal is for the end result to look stunning, but more importantly, for the residents to be pleased, she says. If they re happy, I m happy. In Katherine s case, the walls of her master bedroom are now painted rich hues of green with luxurious fabrics on the bed and settee. John and I love the new look, says Katherine. It was an easy way to refresh our apartment without any cardboard boxes.
