In March, Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Living community in Overland Park, Kans., broke ground on a new continuing care neighborhood. The 104-bed neighborhood, scheduled to open in winter, will provide several different levels of health care. The continuing care neighborhood will be accessible from the main residence building via a walkway, making it easy for Tallgrass Creek residents to visit friends and loved ones. Dr. Austin Welsh, who practices exclusively at Tallgrass Creek to provide a high level of care to the people who live there, says he will continue to treat his residents who move to continuing care. We need a continuing care community to fully meet the medical needs of all residents, Welsh says. It will provide a fuller continuum of care right here at their home.

Levels of care

Tallgrass Creek s continuing care neighborhood will include 28 assisted living apartments, which will be designed for people who need some help with daily living like dressing and reminders to take medication. It will also feature 28 memory care apartments to provide specialized care in a safe and secure environment for people with Alzheimer s and other related illnesses. The community s 44 skilled nursing rooms will be available for people with short-term needs like rehabilitation after a hospital procedure, as well as for people with long-term needs that require more intensive nursing services. I am most excited about the rehabilitation staff and equipment, Welsh says. The therapists will help maintain a higher level of functioning and prevent falls.

High-quality staff

Tallgrass Creek Executive Director Peter Crane says management will be hiring key leadership positions and a large staff of health care professionals to run the continuing care community. As the medical director, I will lead a team of health care workers, including the director of nursing, assistant nurses, and medical aides, Welsh says. I will meet regularly with the administration to ensure that our two aims of ready access and high quality are met.
