Riderwood is home to Erickson Living's reigning softball champions. In June, a group of active retirees from the Silver Spring community strutted their athletic abilities in a lively softball tournament featuring teams from four Erickson Living communities. The so-called Battle of the Beltways tournament matched up teams from Riderwood, as well as from Charlestown and Oak Crest, both located in Baltimore, and Greenspring, in Springfield, Va. The teams competed on a picturesque June afternoon at the Fairfield Athletics and Aquatics Center in Laurel, Md.

Riderwood resident Gordon Ward threw a no-hitter in his team s first game, ushering in a 12-0 victory against Charlestown. In the exciting championship game, Riderwood took on Greenspring. Riderwood broke a tie in the fourth inning with five home runs. In the end, Riderwood secured the 2013 Erickson Living Softball Tournament trophy with an 11-6 victory over Greenspring. We worked hard, practiced as a team, and everyone made a contribution, especially Gordon with the no-hitter in the first game, Riderwood resident and softball team coach Charles Hudson says.
