The Boyntons' garden

In 2010, Irv and Alyce Boynton decided their large Commerce Township, Mich., house on a two-acre lot was no longer the right fit for their retirement needs. So they moved just nine miles away to Fox Run, an Erickson Living community in Novi, Mich. The couple says what they gained by moving to Fox Run far outweighs any square footage they gave up. Irv and Alyce traded their house and the upkeep on it for a spacious, two-bedroom, two-bathroom Kingston-style apartment home at Fox Run. They have a 13-foot patio, where they can garden and enjoy the community s scenic landscaped grounds. We had lived on two acres, and my wife is an animal lover, Irv says. She didn t want to move from her animal habitat to an apartment overlooking a parking lot or something like that. So when [Sales Counselor Carolyn Ives] showed us a Kingston with a view looking over the wetlands, it caught my wife s interest.

Accessible health care

With their move to Fox Run, the Boyntons also gained access to a host of amenities that weren t available to them at their house. A big draw was the easy access to medical care. Fox Run has a full-time physician whose practice is dedicated solely to residents, as well as an on-site pharmacy, home support services, and outpatient therapy. The continuing care neighborhood has short-term rehabilitation, assisted living, and skilled nursing. Irv recently underwent back surgery, and he says the on-site rehab and continuing care were blessings. My wife could just walk over there to visit me, and my physical therapy was right here. Normally, you d have to get in a car and drive for those things, Irv says. I am already well on my way to recovery, and I attribute a lot of that to the accessibility of the health care here at Fox Run. Numerous opportunities to socialize and stay involved with activities they enjoy also appeal to the Boyntons. Irv serves as a volunteer to visit with neighbors staying at Fox Run s continuing care neighborhood. Alyce belongs to the community s writing club and recently read a poem aloud at a resident talent show. They both enjoy getting to know their neighbors at block parties organized by a friend who lives in their residence building. I can t say enough good about the people here, both the residents and the staff, Irv says.
