Keeping your memory sharp

Having a sharp memory is not only good for your brain, it can help you stay functional and independent longer. Today, however, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia-related illness.

That’s why Cedar Crest has launched Memory Fitness as the first part of the comprehensive three-pronged Memory Support program. Memory Fitness is designed for people who currently have no problems with memory and want to keep it that way. The other components of Memory Support—Memory Health and Memory Care—are for people whose dementia has progressed.

Caring for your brain

To get started with Memory Fitness, see your health provider for an assessment of your current cognitive function. Once you have the go-ahead, you can begin Memory Fitness classes, which are offered twice a week for six weeks. In these classes, you learn how to care for your brain and maintain your overall health. You’ll find out which memory-preserving strategies and exercises have been scientifically proven to work and which ones haven’t.

To keep up your memory momentum after classes have ended, you can participate in self-directed activities that you’ve learned about in class. These can be practically anything you choose that relieves stress, teaches you a new hobby, or helps you connect socially.
