Retirees living at Fox Run were especially active this past autumn. For example, many of them took part in a color run, a popular style of 5K race in which participants are doused in a different color paint after each kilometer.

Fox Run staff organized a slightly less messy version—residents passed through brightly colored streamers at each kilometer instead of being splashed with paint.

The color run was the culmination of Fox Run’s annual Walking Challenge. Community members from each of Fox Run’s residence buildings compete against one another to log the most miles walked.

In 2013, Fox Run residents who live in the Hudson Park neighborhood took first place, with 18% participation and an average of 1,821 minutes walked per participant.

Fox Run Wellness Coordinator Alice Hixson says she was looking for “a fun, current idea to get the residents excited about joining the month-long competition and that would really get residents talking about the positive, active lifestyle at Erickson Living communities.”

By all accounts, Hixson’s efforts were a success. In total, 123 residents turned out for the color run.
