‘I can’t wait’

Chadds Ford, Pa., resident Lucy Green had her eye on Maris Grove, Erickson Living’s community in Delaware County, from the time it opened in 2006.

While she researched several other retirement communities, “The people at Maris Grove were more affable,” she says. “There wasn’t the stiffness I found at the others.”

So exactly one year ago, Lucy joined Maris Grove’s priority list.

Maris Grove is currently 98% sold out, but joining the list reserved Lucy’s place in line for the apartment home of her choice based on the date she joined. She selected a two-bedroom, one-bath Flagstaff floor plan with a bay window.

Joining the list also provides access to complimentary assistance from Maris Grove Personal Moving Consultant Suzanne McAllister and her network of preferred realty and moving services vendors.

Priority list members also receive invitations to exclusive luncheons and downsizing- and moving-related events. “The luncheons have let me know how good the food is,” Lucy says. “And I have lots of downsizing to do.”

She wants to sell her four-story, four-bedroom townhouse and move to Maris Grove this summer.

‘You just have to start’

Downsizing is a mindset, says Lucy. “You just have to start.”

When she joined the priority list, Lucy scheduled a home visit with McAllister. She wanted advice about preparing her house for sale and guidance about what furniture to take to Maris Grove and what to dispose of.

She tackled the big things first. Last summer, Lucy replaced her living room and dining room carpeting with hardwood floors. She also installed some new light fixtures and window glass. And she replaced her master bedroom and stairway carpeting.

This winter, she’s talking with art appraisers and book dealers from McAllister’s list; Lucy’s basement is packed with books. She’ll rely on other referrals to help dispose of unwanted large furniture.

This spring, she’ll interview Maris Grove-preferred real estate agents, including one she consulted with at a priority list event last spring.

Lucy walks at least three miles a day. She’s thrilled with Maris Grove’s many outdoor paths, that all of its buildings are connected internally through glass-enclosed bridges, and that an outdoor shopping mall exists just across the street.

She anticipates spending next winter at Maris Grove. “I can’t wait,” she says.

3 steps

Start now to live at Maris Grove by year’s end.

1. Meet with Sales Counselor Kimberly Janson to join Maris Grove’s priority list. Based on the date you join, you’ll save your place in line for the apartment home of your choice.

2. For a downsizing plan and to learn the process of marketing a house, schedule a home visit with Suzanne McAllister, Maris Grove’s personal moving consultant. Her services and referrals to preferred vendors are complimentary to priority list members.

3. Start downsizing. Doing one hour each day will make a difference.

“There’s a buyer for every house,” says McAllister, “so the day you reserve your apartment home, your house should be ready to market.”

In 2013, houses listed by Maris Grove’s preferred real estate vendors averaged just 28 days on market.
