George and Laura Madrid thought their retirement plans included sunny Southern California, where George worked for 35 years as an aerospace systems engineer at a NASA center for robotic space flight.

But living far from their two children, a son in Texas and a daughter in Geneva, Switzerland, gave them a moment’s pause.

“Although we loved California, we decided to move to Plano to be closer to our son,” says George.

Now, with their son taking a new job in Louisiana, the couple has moved once more, this time to Highland Springs, an Erickson Living community in North Dallas.

Setting priorities

“We attended luncheons at Highland Springs and joined the priority list,” says George. “Our main concern was finding a community with an on-site medical center so health care is available should we need it in the future.”

The couple’s other requirement, a spacious floor plan with ample closet space, was noted on their priority list application. When a large one-bedroom, Glendale-style apartment with a den and one-and-a-half baths became available in October 2012, Personal Moving Consultant Gail Wrzesinski gave George and Laura a call.

“When Gail called to tell us an apartment that met our specifications was available, my first thought was that we had to sell our Plano house,” says George. “I was afraid October might be a hard time to sell.”

George’s concerns were unfounded. Wrzesinski connected the couple with an Erickson Living-recommended real estate agent, and the house sold for more than the asking price on the first day it was listed.

“Those weeks were a whirlwind,” says George. “Everything happened so fast, we didn’t have time to downsize. Gail helped us again by arranging for an estate sale. We were able to move to our new apartment in November with all the help we received from Gail and Erickson Realty and Moving Services.”

The couple’s quick move also produced another, less anticipated, benefit.

“We were in our apartment when the ice storm hit in early December,” says George. “Laura and I commented on how nice it was to access the fitness center and the restaurants without going outside. With all the help we received, it turned out to be a convenient way to move.”
