Jim and Jan Hall haven’t lived through a cold winter in more than 40 years. The couple moved to Laguna Beach in Orange County, Calif., in 1969, where they lived in a large two-story house until last year. That’s when they decided to move across the country to be closer to their son, who lives in Washington, D.C.

Last November, just in time for cold season to begin, the Halls moved into an Oxford-style apartment home at Riderwood, an Erickson Living community in Silver Spring, Md. Fortunately, their reintroduction to winter has been a gentle one thanks to Riderwood’s climate-controlled design and maintenance-free lifestyle.

“When it snowed, me being a California girl, I thought, ‘Aren’t we lucky we don’t have to go out in that snow?’” Jan says. “We have a parking place underground, and if something goes wrong in our apartment, the staff takes care of it.”

Winter can be a wonderland

For people who live at Riderwood, when the snow starts falling, they can sit back and enjoy the view. That’s because they’re enjoying maintenance-free living, which means tedious winter chores like shoveling snow and salting pathways are handled by Riderwood’s professional staff.

“We’re relieving ourselves of a lot of responsibilities that we didn’t want to do, like taking care of all the trees. It’s so nice not to have to worry about that,” Jim says.

What’s more, Riderwood houses a host of amenities all under one roof. The full-service community features five on-site restaurants, a bank, a convenience store, a medical center, a salon and spa, and a fitness and aquatics center with a heated indoor swimming pool and hot tub, which is the perfect spot to relax on cold winter days.

Each residence building has its own clubhouse, where fireplaces roar all winter long. Residence buildings and common areas are connected by heated indoor walkways.
