If you’ve been near the corner of Mountain Avenue and South Street, you may have thought mountains were being moved. And you’d be right. But what exactly is going on behind the hill?

Construction is under way on Lantern Hill, the fee-for-service continuing care retirement community that will open there in fall 2015. Blasting, digging, and stone and dirt removal began in mid-May. By project’s end, 20,000 to 25,000 cubic yards of dirt will be removed from the site and taken to Weldon, down Diamond Hill Road.

This early work will make way for underground parking and building foundations. By mid-June, concrete work had begun.

Lantern Hill will open with 275 independent living apartment homes and a continuing care neighborhood with 85 residences. The community will offer the convenience of everything under one roof: an amenity-rich clubhouse on the first two floors and apartment homes occupying the remainder of the first building.

Lantern Hill will open with three buildings, including the clubhouse building. Two remaining buildings will open just a few months later. “Walkways will connect every building, ensuring a climate-controlled, weatherproof community for distinctive retirement living,” says Patricia Swan, Lantern Hill’s executive director.
