As the summer season winds down, gardens across the state hit their peak this month. Cedar Crest, the Erickson Living community in Pompton Plains, N.J., put on a show all summer long. A large area of the community holds 110 8- by 8-foot gardens that grow vegetable varieties, annuals, perennials, even a fig tree.

Here, Joan Heffernan, who lives at the community, waters her tomato plants early in the season. By now, the plants are bursting with red globes just begging to be eaten.
