Carolyn Caci is no stranger to downsizing.
The mother of five raised her children in the same 12-room house where she was raised. But when it came time to sell the family home, Carolyn knew her memories were the most precious treasure of all.
“I had to let go of so many things,” she says. “But I realized those things don’t make me who I am.”
Carolyn and her husband settled into a two-bedroom townhouse in North Chelmsford, along the Merrimack River.
“I loved the view and living on the river,” says Carolyn, a retired librarian. “But when my husband passed away, the townhouse got to be awfully big and lonely.”
In February 2013, Carolyn downsized once more, this time to a one-bedroom apartment home at Brooksby, the Erickson Living community in Peabody, Mass.
“I feel so privileged to be living at Brooksby,” says Carolyn. “There’s so much going for me here.”
Keeping what’s important
With her daughter’s help, Carolyn examined her options at Brooksby before deciding on a one-bedroom Brighton floor plan. The apartment features an open floor plan with a modern kitchen, large living space with a picture window, and a generously sized bedroom with a full bath and walk-in closet.
“This is just the right amount of space for me,” says Carolyn. “Downsizing from the townhouse helped me focus on the things that were most important. What came with me here are items I find useful or meaningful.”
One-story living is another welcome change from the three-level townhome she left behind.
“In the townhouse, it was inevitable that whatever I needed would be on another floor,” says Carolyn. “If I needed scissors, they’d be on the first floor while I was on the second floor. Everything is so convenient in my apartment.”
Nurtured by nature
“The Brighton is one of our most popular one-bedroom floor plans,” says Sales Director Suzanne Davis. “The open concept and large windows add to the apartment’s spaciousness, and all of our Brighton apartments have been upgraded with granite countertops and under-mount stainless steel sinks.”
Carolyn says the big windows were the apartment’s selling feature.
“I said ‘yes’ as soon as I stepped inside,” she says. “It was October, and the trees outside were turning color. It was mesmerizing.”
Now that she has experienced all four seasons at Brooksby, Carolyn says her apartment’s connection to the outdoors is still her favorite feature.
“In winter, I see the icicles on the branches, in summer, the trees are a sea of green, and in spring, I see everything come alive,” she says. “It’s like watching a symphony. It feeds my soul.”
Upsizing the amenities
Although she downsized her square footage, Carolyn says the community’s ample amenities make her feel as though she expanded her living space.
“I love the fact that we have an indoor fitness center and swimming pool,” she says. “I can go for a swim whenever I get the urge.”
Brooksby’s five restaurants are another welcome change, as Carolyn bid farewell to cooking.
“My whole lifestyle has become easier since I moved to Brooksby,” she says. “I can spend time on the activities I enjoy.”
Shortly after she moved in, Carolyn joined the Brooksby Singers. She also volunteers weekly at the community’s continuing care neighborhood.
“If I have any complaint at all, it’s just making up my mind what to do,” she says. “There’s so much going on.”
