For two decades, Melisa Batac has been in the business of helping people discover their retirement dream home.

Batac joined Oak Crest in 1995 when it was nothing more than a gatehouse and a construction site. Over the last nineteen years, she has served in various roles in at least a half dozen different departments at the Parkville, Md., Erickson Living community. Now in the role of sales counselor, the mother of two brings her dedication to helping others by assisting hundreds of people each year who are actively researching their retirement options.

Batac recently sat down with the Tribune to share tips for securing the most desirable apartment homes and the easiest way to experience all that Oak Crest has to offer.

I can see myself living at Oak Crest in the future. I am just not ready to move at this time. Is it too early to join the priority list?

Batac: This is, by far, the question I receive more than any other, and the answer is important. Joining the priority list is the only guaranteed way to ensure a future at Oak Crest. Oak Crest is 99% sold out. Whether you hope to move in one year or ten years, membership ensures that your apartment home at Oak Crest will be available when you are ready to move. In fact, our priority list includes many children of our current residents. They’ve witnessed the Erickson Living lifestyle firsthand and now want to make it a part of their future.

It’s important to note, there is no penalty should your preferred apartment home become available before you are ready to move. It’s simply offered to the next member on the list, and your priority list status remains the same.

Also, while on the priority list, you will have opportunities to learn more about our community, meet current residents, attend special priority list functions, and tour apartment homes.

Once I am ready to move to Oak Crest, what services are available to help me make my move?

Batac: My colleague Ashley Ruth provides complimentary personalized realty and moving services to future community members.

Ashley will make your move to Oak Crest as stress-free and seamless as possible. To that end, she will meet you in your home, discuss your expectations, and develop a comprehensive selling and moving plan based on your individual needs. She will put you in touch with Oak Crest-recommended real estate agents, moving and packing specialists, estate sale companies, downsizing experts, and will refer you to any other services necessary to help you with the sale of your house.

Can I customize my apartment?

Batac: Your home is a reflection of you. Just because you’re moving out of a house and into an apartment doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your personal style. Whether it’s custom carpentry work such as built-in bookcases, shelving, crown molding, or custom closets; designer lighting;  window treatments; upgraded carpet; tile; hardwood flooring; or granite countertops, our custom interiors department can help you design a beautiful space that’s uniquely you.

What apartment homes are available now?

Batac: As I mentioned previously, Oak Crest is 99% sold out. That means selection is limited, which is why it is so important to join our priority list. However, we do have a limited number of our studio and one-bedroom floor plans available now.

Our popular one-bedroom Brighton model features an extra-wide picture window, full-sized walk-in closet, extra-large living area, and a spacious kitchen filled with state-of-the-art modern appliances.

Our innovative deluxe studio floor plan, the Abbott, is the perfect living space for active singles who want all of the amenities and conveniences of an Erickson Living community without any wasted space. A modern kitchen, full bath, and generous walk-in closet make the Abbott both a smart and affordable choice.

In your opinion, what are the top three reasons why Oak Crest is a smart financial decision?

Batac: The predictable monthly service package allows you greater control over your expenses. The refundable entrance deposit allows you to secure your nest egg and promote a financial legacy for your family. And you have peace of mind with Oak Crest’s home for life pledge.

Oak Crest is a not-for-profit community dedicated to supporting residents who experience an unforeseen change in financial situation. Should your finances change for reasons beyond your control, our Home for Life Commitment provides several options so you can protect your future. The Residence and Care Agreement has all the details.
