When it came time to help her parents choose a retirement community, Barb Kelley toured Trace on the recommendation of one of her husband’s business associates.

“He told me it was a great community,” says Barb. “My parents, who moved from Nashville, were especially pleased with the on-site amenities, including the medical center, pharmacy, bank, and salon. They didn’t have to seek out those services once they arrived at Eagle’s Trace because they were already in place.”

As an only child, Barb worked closely with her parents and the Eagle’s Trace sales team to coordinate all aspects of the move.

“It was a huge undertaking,” says Barb. “My parents moved to Eagle’s Trace in October 2008. At that time, the community was rolling out its moving program, Erickson Realty and Moving Services. I realized the program, which assists with finding a [real estate agent], moving company, and any other needed services, was going to be a tremendous help for others in our situation.”

New chapter for all

Fast forward six and a half years.

“My parents are thriving at Eagle’s Trace,” says Barb. “I didn’t realize how cool my dad is until I started spending more time with him. He’s so social. Most mornings he goes down to the clubhouse to hang out with his coffee klatch. And my mom Edythe likes to play bridge and read books from the library. This has been a whole new part of their lives.”

Barb is also enjoying a new chapter in life. After spending 25 years in the corporate world, she embarked on a different career path five years ago.

“My mother was a real estate agent, and I followed in her footsteps,” says Barb, who’s affiliated with RE/MAX Realty Center in Cypress. “I work with buyers and sellers of all ages, but I especially enjoy helping seniors because I walked that path with my parents.”

Eagle’s Trace continues to play a large part in Barb’s life, both personally and professionally. She is an Erickson Living-preferred real estate agent and has helped more than 35 residents move to the community.

“I get excited about helping people sell their homes and move to Eagle’s Trace because I know the wonderful lifestyle that’s waiting for them,” says Barb, who’s earned her Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designation. “I also understand the challenges of moving, and I’m glad to help with the transition.”

Active real estate market

As the spring selling season rolls around, Barb is gearing up for a busy 2015. According to the Houston Association of REALTORS® (HAR), 2014 was a record year for Houston’s residential real estate market, with strong gains recorded in sales volume and pricing.

“We’re anticipating another strong year in 2015,” says Barb. “For those who are considering a move, it’s a great time to sell.”

Increasing your home’s appeal

Expert Barb Kelley’s real estate tips

1. Catch the buyer’s eye. “You only have 30 seconds to make a first impression. Fertilize the lawn, plant flowers, clean windows.”

2. Declutter.

“Buyers should be able to picture themselves in the home. Pack up collectibles and personal photos.”

3. Set the stage.

“Create a warm welcome. Soft background music and fresh flowers will make buyers feel welcome.”
