Want to know about all aspects of community life at ? Ask Kelly Tapp.

Like her colleague Brian Cassidy (who was featured in last month’s issue), Tapp has worked at Cedar Crest since she was a teenager. And like Cassidy, she began her career as a dining associate in one of the Pompton Plains, N.J., community’s four on-site restaurants. When she was ready for more responsibility, Tapp took a role as programming assistant in the on-site continuing care neighborhood.

Six years later, she now serves as sales associate and events coordinator for Cedar Crest’s independent living apartment homes.

“I love the whole concept of what we do here at Cedar Crest, from independent living to continuing care. We better the lives of the senior population,” Tapp says enthusiastically. Maybe because she’s witnessed it happen firsthand.

Active lifestyle

“I’ve seen people who were isolated and depressed living alone in their house completely change their lives and become happy again after moving to Cedar Crest because here they’re surrounded by friends in the comfort of their home,” she says.

“When you’re in a house and you can’t drive, for example, you’re stuck there. At Cedar Crest, you can be social and partake in clubs or activities, if and when you want to,” she explains.

As programming assistant in the continuing care neighborhood, Tapp developed activities for residents to stay engaged despite health issues. Now as sales associate and events coordinator, she helps healthy, active people discover all that Cedar Crest has to offer in independent living.

The community is a host of engaging goings-on, such as book clubs, song and theater troupes, travel groups, group exercise classes, writers’ workshops, cards and games, and much more. In fact, Cedar Crest boasts 180 resident-run clubs and activities.

“We have a very active and interesting population here at Cedar Crest,” says Resident Life Manager Erica Zayat. “Whether its mental or physical stimulation, we have something for everyone.”

Tapp says that, personally, she has grown from her interaction with the people who live at Cedar Crest. “There have been quite a few residents who have made an impact on my life,” she says.

The most prominent lesson she’s learned: “You can never stop growing and learning. I learn so much being around our residents. They really ground me as a person.”

‘We take care of that’

Another reason why Tapp touts the Cedar Crest lifestyle: “It’s truly maintenance-free. That aspect helps enhance the quality of life. You’re not worrying about replacing your roof because we take care of that. You’re not endangering your life by getting on a ladder to change a lightbulb because we take care of that.”

Even the sales events she plans exemplify the Cedar Crest lifestyle. “When you come for a luncheon, you’re experiencing what life is really like here at Cedar Crest. We serve delicious food you would eat daily if you lived here. You’re seeing people engaged in activities and going about their daily lives,” Tapp says.

Events range from general interest to those that are exclusive to priority list members. The priority list comprises people who have paid a fully refundable $1,000 deposit and $150 nonrefundable application fee to hold their place in line for the apartment home of their choice.

They also receive invitations to exclusive events and access to Erickson Realty and Moving Services, which provides complimentary coordination of all realty and moving needs, including downsizing, home staging, packing, and selection of a real estate professional.

She plans events around the service, which help priority list members learn how to prioritize, downsize, and choose real estate and moving professionals.

“These are definitely some of our most popular events because they are so purposeful and useful,” Tapp says. “People say Erickson Realty and Moving Services and the events really help ease some of the burden of moving.

“I think Erickson Realty and Moving Services is one of the greatest things we have to offer,” Tapp adds
