Freezing temperatures; slick, dangerous roads; mounds of snow that need shoveling; and heating systems that give out on the day you need them most—there’s plenty to dread about Mid-Atlantic winters. But many Marylanders who have grown tired of dealing with the downsides of winter have found a warm and welcoming new home at Oak Crest, an Erickson Living community in Parkville.

The community’s maintenance-free living enables residents to enjoy the beauty of winter, like watching the snow fall while they sit by a roaring fire in the clubhouses or enjoying festive holiday parties with friends, without any of the season’s hassles.

The Tribune caught up with Personal Moving Consultant Ashley Ruth, who answered some frequently asked questions about the benefits of living at Oak Crest when the worst of winter arrives. Here’s what she had to say:

What amenities does Oak Crest have to make life easier during the winter?

A: Having the ability to stay active and socially engaged regardless of the weather is a huge advantage to living at Oak Crest. Every maintenance-free apartment home is just a short indoor walk from our three clubhouses where you’ll find all of the conveniences of a small town.

You can do your banking, shopping, get a haircut, take a college class, meet friends for a drink or a bite to eat, grab a book from the library—everything you would normally do without hopping in and out of your car or worrying about the weather.

You can even stick to your regular fitness routine, whether that’s walking laps indoors through the community, exercising in the fitness center, attending an on-site aerobics class, or swimming in the pool.

And you’ll never have to cancel another doctor’s appointment because of bad weather with our medical center and pharmacy just a few steps away.

How does living at Oak Crest keep residents safer during the winter?

A: Oak Crest residents enjoy a complimentary transportation service that takes them directly from the community’s front door to a variety of destinations like grocery stores and shopping malls. The transportation service is a wonderful way to avoid driving in the snow.

You also never have to worry about shoveling heavy snow or risk slipping on an icy sidewalk to go get your mail. From snow removal to checking heating units to appliance repair or replacement, the highly skilled maintenance staff at Oak Crest responds quickly seven days a week.

The community is also equipped to handle a power outage, although rare. We have emergency generators that keep the electricity on in all of our public areas and hallways. Emergency medical staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And our markets and restaurants are open and well stocked.

What feedback do you receive from residents about how living at Oak Crest has made their winters more enjoyable?

A: Many of our community members have stopped going to Florida as an escape from the winter months. Instead, they have decided to make Oak Crest their home year-round.

The wide variety of activities and conveniences offered at Oak Crest make it an attractive place to live in any season. We have 175 resident-led clubs and activities, including dance classes, bridge groups, art classes, theater and choir groups, a woodshop, and dozens of volunteer opportunities. And the weather never puts a damper on your ability to socialize, dine out, or even cheer on the Baltimore Ravens while enjoying drinks and snacks with friends in our Acorn Pub.

Is there still time for me to move to Oak Crest before winter sets in?

A: Oak Crest is currently 99% sold out. That means selection is limited, which is why it is so important to join our priority list. However, we do have a limited number of our studio and one-bedroom floor plans available.

Our popular one-bedroom Brighton model features a full-sized walk-in closet, extra-large living area with wide picture window, and a spacious kitchen filled with modern appliances.

Our innovative deluxe studio floor plan, the Abbott, is the perfect living space for active singles who want all of the amenities and conveniences of an Erickson Living community without any wasted space. A modern kitchen, full bath, and generous walk-in closet make the Abbott both a smart and affordable choice.
