North Carolina couple finds carefree living at Wind Crest

In the 1850s, prospectors crossed the Great Plains and came to the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Some say they found gold and stopped to stake their claim. Others say they saw the mountains towering above and—after a long, hard journey—many simply decided to go no farther.  

Regardless, Denver, Colo., sprang up from tents, tepees, wagons, lean-tos, and log cabins along the banks of the South Platte River, as prospectors continued to trek cross-country seeking their fortunes. 

A few weeks ago, Al and Ardi Gough made a similar trek across the continental United States—albeit much easier and with a different kind of fortune lying ahead. They packed their belongings in Western North Carolina and set out for maintenance-free living at Wind Crest, the Erickson Living community in Highlands Ranch.

“We’ve looked at many retirement communities and found that Wind Crest has the best amenities and medical care of them all,” says Al. 

Coming home

The Goughs lived in Colorado from 1980 to 1995 but moved to North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains in 1995. When their three children settled in Colorado, they knew they’d return some day. 

That day came when they joined the priority list in the summer of 2014. They had learned of Wind Crest’s second neighborhood; the time was right. They reserved a home in The High Line Overlook, which opened in late October. 

“We liked the layout and that it’s fresh and new,” Al says, adding that having amenities within the building was a huge plus. He’s excited about the fitness center, restaurants, and new horseshoe court.

The large Red Rocks Catering Room, located on the terrace level of High Line Overlook, adds space for private parties, events, and meetings. Opposite the catering room, Burton’s Steakhouse serves residents from all over the community. 

The first floor houses the community’s third fitness center, a complement to the main fitness center in the first neighborhood, as well as a second fitness center in McHenry’s Crossing, which opened in November 2014. 

In addition to 30 apartment homes, The High Line Overlook adds a 230-seat arts and enrichment center with a stage and theater seating on the terrace level. The center houses the community’s TV studio, where residents can assist in television show production. 

Above the Arts and Enrichment Center, The High Line Terrace Courtyard provides breathtaking views of the mountains and adds a delightful outdoor venue for parties and events, such as neighborhood happy hours.

Four homes on the first floor of High Line Overlook walk out to the terrace courtyard with views of the High Line Canal and the Front Range. Others face the neighboring golf course’s rolling greens. 

First choice

Al and Ardi chose the Walton—a luxury two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath corner floor plan with open design, two great rooms, a laundry/storage room, and patio. At just under 2,000 square feet, it gives them plenty of storage and a guest room for when grandchildren come to stay. 

“We looked at all the plans for almost a year, and this was the one we liked best,” Al says.

Among the largest homes at Wind Crest, the Walton includes two expansive living areas plus a separate dining area for formal occasions. Its large master suite has a spacious walk-in closet, two linen closets, and a bathroom with double vanity. 

“We’ve listened to our customers, and many want larger homes,” says Sales Counselor Molly Thorne-Dhieux. “By designing large models like the Walton, along with other new one- and two-bedroom floor plans, we now have more options for every budget and lifestyle.”

The High Line Overlook introduced eight new floor plans to Wind Crest. They range from extra-large one-bedroom models to deluxe two-bedroom designs. “We have gotten a tremendous response to the new models,” Thorne-Dhieux says.

And it shows. With just a few apartments left in both the new and original neighborhoods, “We are running out of inventory very quickly,” says Sales Director Jason Atwell. “We have very few apartment homes remaining. Folks need to come and meet with Molly [Thorne-Dhieux] to reserve their new home before they’re all gone.”
