Charity Plank Challenge raises fitness and funds

At Linden Ponds, giving back is an important shared value among residents and staff. Earlier this year, employees at the Erickson Living community in Hingham, Mass., took part in a 30-day Charity Plank Challenge. The employee who was able to hold the difficult pose for the longest time received $500 to be donated to the charitable organization of his or her choice.

“Employees were challenged to hold the plank position for 4 ½ minutes culminating in a Plank-Off on May 13,” says Rosemarie Spada, a nurse practitioner in the employee health and wellness department at Linden Ponds. “The program’s purpose was to challenge employees to achieve a higher level of fitness throughout the month and compete for the top prize—money donated to their favorite charity.”

Barbara Leary, a fitness specialist at Linden Ponds, is the physically fit employee who won the challenge. She clocked just over six minutes in the plank position. Leary chose to donate her prize money to Rockland Food Pantry, an organization that she says is near and dear to her, as she has been on both the giving and receiving end of its services.

“I am very grateful for assistance received in the past and am always anxious for the opportunity to give back,” Leary says.
