Her heart’s in senior living

Lynn Wattles joins the team at Devonshire

Lynn Wattles, recently named sales manager and event coordinator at Devonshire at PGA National, brings the ideal combination of education and experience to her position at Erickson Living’s retirement community in Palm Beach Gardens.

Originally from Connecticut, Wattles settled in the Palm Beach area 35 years ago. In addition to a successful career in real estate, she spent many years in the health care field. 

For 25 years, she worked in hospitals as a respiratory therapist and then turned to pharmaceutical sales. 

She next became the director of business development at a local senior living community and then was the marketing director at a local hospital.

But she soon realized her heart was in senior living. 

“I missed it,” she says. “At the end of the day, I felt we’d made a difference in people’s lives. It was a leap of faith for them to leave their homes and move to a retirement community, and we could guide them in making the decision that was right for them.”

Wattles began an online job search and found Erickson Living’s posting for the sales manager position at Devonshire.

She was well-versed about Devonshire and its reputation for elegant living. Erickson Living, however, was a new entrant in Florida’s retirement community segment. 

But the more Wattles learned about the company and its leading role in the industry, the more she realized that Erickson Living and Devonshire shared the same culture—a strong sense of family. 

‘Overwhelming sense of family’

“It’s an overwhelming sense of family,” she says. “Erickson Living stresses the importance of working as a team, and the outcomes are much more positive. You don’t find that attitude at other places.”

Wattles applied for the position and was one of several candidates interviewed. Her credentials rose to the top and earned her the job.

She looks forward to coming to the office each day to interact with staff, residents, and prospective residents. 

And she can readily pinpoint the best part of her job.

“I love taking a call that turns into an appointment that becomes a tour that becomes an apartment home reservation and then a move-in,” she says. “Then I feel I’ve made a difference in that person’s life. And I have that opportunity every time I pick up the phone.”

Event coordination, which she did a lot of as a marketing director, represents the fun side of her job. 

“It’s wonderful to work with everyone on the team, from the chef to the activities director,” says Wattles. “And it’s exciting bringing new faces into Devonshire to experience the community for the first time.”

Community ties

Family counts just as much off the job as on for Wattles and her husband. 

Because their two daughters and their two grandchildren live in their same neighborhood, everyone gets together often.

When the Wattles aren’t spending time with the grandkids, they play golf and enjoy traveling. 

Their son, a pro golfer and caddy, recently moved to Connecticut.
