Many people choose to sell their houses in the spring—a time when many buyers are shopping and eager to move while the weather is mild and before a new school year begins. If you’re thinking about putting your house on the market this spring, you may be surprised to learn that the time to start preparing is now.

In fact, Kristine Kluge, a personal moving consultant who helps retirees sell their houses and move to Fox Run, the Erickson Living community in Novi, Mich., says that the spring real estate market is well under way by April.

Here, Kluge shares her expert opinion on what homeowners should be doing right now if they hope to sell their house this spring.

Q: I’m thinking of selling my house in the spring. When do I need to start preparing?

A: The sooner the better, but realistically, after the holiday season is a great time to start. If you get started in January, you can do a little at a time, which will help decrease any stress you’re feeling.

Q: What do I need to do to my house now so that it will be ready to sell in the spring?

A: Organize and declutter your home a little at a time, determine if you have possessions that you can give to family or charity, and once we enter the new year, begin some early spring cleaning. Certainly, interviewing real estate agents, whom we can refer through our Erickson Realty and Moving Services program, is also important in preparing for a spring sale.

Q: If my house isn’t ready for sale by the start of the spring selling season, how could that affect my chances of selling and/or the sale price?

A: Springtime is the busiest time and highly competitive for home sales, so you could miss out on initial hot opportunities. But don’t stress too much if you’re not ready to put your house on the market by March. Buyers are constantly entering the market.

Q: I’m thinking of moving to Fox Run when I sell my house. How can you help me prepare it now to sell in the spring?

A: Through a home visit, I will create a plan with you that will include a list of resources and vendors to help you accomplish the goal of a spring move to Fox Run.

Q: How much money should I plan to spend to get my house ready to sell in the spring?

A: That really depends on the condition of your home, which we will determine through a home visit.

Q: How much might I save by using Erickson Living-preferred vendors?

A: We offer the Move On Us program, which reimburses up to $2,000 in moving expenses.

Q: What is the outlook for the local spring real estate market?

A: The real estate market was excellent last spring, and we anticipate the same for the upcoming spring. Certainly, the possibility of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve could impact this—time will tell. But warmer weather always brings out consumers who are excitedly looking for homes and will pay the best price.
