Many people choose to sell their houses in the spring—a time when many buyers are shopping and eager to move while the weather is mild and before a new school year begins. If you’re thinking about putting your house on the market this spring, you may be surprised to learn that the time to start preparing is now.

In fact, Diane Thometz, a personal moving consultant who helps retirees sell their houses and move to Riderwood, the Erickson Living retirement community in Silver Spring, Md., says that the spring real estate market begins in February and ends in May. Thometz shares her expert opinion on what homeowners should be doing now if they hope to sell their house this spring.

Q: I’m thinking of selling my house in the spring. What should be my first step?

A: Before committing to the spring market, I recommend meeting with our preferred real estate professionals for a market analysis. They can tell you what home improvements you should consider before putting your house on the market. They’ll also let you know which homes have sold in your neighborhood and will recommend a sales price for your home. You’ll get educated on the housing market, which will help you make a decision for when you want to sell your home.

Q: What do I need to do to my house now so that it will be ready to sell in the spring?

A: The best home improvements to consider before putting your house on the market are a fresh coat of paint that’s a neutral color and replacing the carpet or exposing hardwood floors.

Q: I’m thinking of moving to Riderwood when I sell my house. How can you help me prepare it now to sell in the spring?

A: When you’re ready to move to Riderwood, I’ll get you in touch with our preferred real estate agent in your area. This real estate agent will help you decide whether you should sell your home “as is” or if you’ll recoup the money that you put into home improvements. If you use one of our recommended real estate agents, Riderwood will reimburse up to $2,000 of your moving expenses once your home has sold and you have moved to Riderwood.

Q: What is the outlook for the local spring real estate market? Is this a good time to sell my house?

A: The real estate market is strong right now and will continue to stay that way for the foreseeable future. Every month of the year is a great time to sell. The serious buyer is always considering their next move, including the winter months.
