Several years ago, when Jim and Arlyne Lane first attended a sales luncheon at Devonshire at PGA National, Erickson Living’s retirement community in Palm Beach Gardens, they thought it was a little too inland for them.

Their home in Highland Beach, Fla., was right by the ocean, and during Jim’s career as an investment manager, they’d had a home at the Jersey Shore.

Still, they paid Devonshire another, more recent visit and discovered they liked everything about it.

Its five restaurants especially appealed to Arlyne. And when they toured a 2,000-square-foot Kensington apartment, spacious enough to accommodate her treasured Steinway baby grand, “We both fell in love with it,” she says.

The die was cast.

The Lanes reserved the apartment immediately and arranged for upgrades and customized design elements. They also turned to Devonshire-recommended Senior Transitions to do their packing.

A staff of six spent 100 hours packing, repacking, unpacking, and putting things away in the same places as in the couple’s former house.

“We don’t really need this much room,” says Arlyne, “but we’re enjoying it.”

In addition to their beautiful new home, Devonshire offered the Lanes another unbeatable advantage: Their daughter, 3 of their sons, and their 14 grandchildren are scattered across the country, but their other son and his wife live nearby in Marisol in Palm Beach Gardens.

It’s a close-knit family. Someone visits the Lanes nearly every month, and family photos are on prominent display throughout the home. Arlyne says that moving to Devonshire was a gift to their children.

The Devonshire lifestyle

While not an oceanfront address, the Lanes’ Devonshire home is not in a hurricane-evacuation zone, a fact they really appreciate.

And, adds Jim, “We can always go to clubs for dinner right on the ocean.”

They’ve maintained their membership in the Boca Raton Resort Club and return often to see long-time friends. The Lanes also invite those friends for world-class cuisine at Devonshire.

Arlyne can’t decide which clubhouse restaurant is her favorite because all the food is excellent. But she is partial to the Windsor’s dress code.

“I love it that Jim wears a tie,” she says. “The atmosphere is formal and quiet, and everyone is dressed up.”

Their post-dinner clubhouse activities can include live music in the lounge, live entertainment in the performing arts center, or movies in the theater.

And the staff provides unparalleled service. “We had a defective washing machine and they brought a new one the next day,” says Arlyne. “Then they replaced the dryer with one that matched the washer.”

As Devonshire residents, the Lanes also have corporate membership privileges at PGA National and can play on its golf courses.

“We feel pampered,” Arlyne says. “It’s very easy to be happy here.”
