It’s a common complaint: congested roadways and overbooked flights have taken the fun out of travel.

But you won’t hear that from people who journey with the Trips and Travel group at Maris Grove, Erickson Living’s retirement community in Delaware County, Pa.

They can choose from an intriguing array of trips both near and far thanks to Sally Christy, Maris Grove’s community resources manager. She also manages Maris Grove’s travel program.

Day trips—excursions within a 50-mile radius—leverage Maris Grove’s location within the beautiful and museum-rich Brandywine Valley and its proximity to Center City Philadelphia’s cultural and historic attractions.

Day excursions range from music theaters, historic sites, and holiday lights displays to the Philadelphia Flower Show, Winterthur, and a lunch-included Chinatown tour led by Maris Grove Fitness Center Manager John O’Donnell.

This summer’s offerings even include the Harley-Davidson factory in York, Pa.

The safety-conscious and courteous drivers from Maris Grove’s transportation department take the wheel for day trips and provide to-the-door service. They drop passengers off at their destination and pick them up at the same spot.

Riding in style

Passengers ride in comfort in Maris Grove’s climate-controlled bus and chat with their neighbors instead of hassling with driving and parking.

Christy partners with a travel agency for more-distant trips such as Manhattan’s 9/11 Museum and last December’s Hawaiian cruise, but Maris Grove transports the travelers to and from the Philadelphia airport.

Among the overnight trips scheduled this year are a bus tour through southern England and a trip to the Canadian Rockies and the Calgary Stampede.

There’s also a tour of the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania and an Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Queen Mary 2. Trips to Niagara Falls and Branson, Mo., could be in the works as well.

Residents’ friends, families, and members of the community’s priority list—people who plan to move to Maris Grove—are welcome along on any trip. “We encourage residents to bring their friends,” Christy says.
