Retirement expert explains how preparing ahead can benefit you now and in the long run

Have you been thinking about exploring retirement living options, but you’re unsure where to start? Many local retirees say that one of the easiest ways to learn more about Oak Crest is to join the priority list. Members have opportunities to visit the community, interact with the people who live there, and tour the campus. 

To provide you with even more information, the Tribune recently asked Oak Crest Sales Counselor Melisa Batac to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the priority list. Here’s what she had to say:

Q: I’ve heard about the priority list, but I’m not sure what it is. Can you tell me about it? 

A: The priority list secures a position on our waitlist for an apartment home. We will notify you when your desired apartment styles become available. We encourage prospective residents to join the priority list, which requires a simple application, a refundable deposit of $1,000, and a onetime, nonrefundable processing fee of $150 per person.  

Q: What are the benefits of joining the priority list?  

A: There are many benefits to joining the priority list at Oak Crest. They include invitations to members-only events, advance notice of special savings, first right of refusal when an apartment home does become available, and transfer of priority membership to any other Erickson Living community. 

One of the biggest advantages comes at moving time. Priority list members may use Erickson Realty and Moving Services to help them downsize, choose a real estate agent and moving company, and plan their furniture arrangement in their new home, among other helpful services.  

Q: What kinds of events will I be invited to if I join the priority list? 

A: Priority list members receive invitations to monthly events and luncheons, so they can come and learn more about what Oak Crest has to offer. Our events vary from financial roundtable discussions to health and fitness events, as well as presentations from our Erickson Realty and Moving Services team, who share best practices from real estate professionals, relocation experts, and moving companies. 

Q: How will being a member of the priority list help me figure out if I want to move to Oak Crest?  

A: People often tell me they are not ready but just want to “put a plan in place” or “kick the tires” or “do their homework.”  

It’s never too soon to start your research. You deserve the opportunity to see what option works best for your needs. Being on the priority list gives you special access to our community, as well as opportunities to explore our expansive clubhouses and to attend community events. 

Q: What is Erickson Realty and Moving Services, and how can priority list members take advantage of it?

A: Priority list members also have access to planning services from our personal moving consultant, Ashley Ruth. She can recommend ideas for staging the house for sale and downsizing, plus offer referrals to our trusted vendors, including antique dealers, art dealers, consignment shops, movers, and real estate professionals.  

Q: I’m not ready to move yet. Should I still join the priority list?

A: If you are thinking of other living situations, then you are ready to put a plan in place. Our priority list members get the chance to meet their neighbors, share in hobbies and group activities, and experience many of the other benefits of being an Oak Crest resident. We want you to have the opportunity to make friends and connections before you move to Oak Crest so that you will have a network of friends already awaiting your arrival. 

Joining the priority list is also the only guaranteed way to ensure a future at Oak Crest. Whether you hope to move in one year or ten years, membership ensures that your home at Oak Crest will be available when you are ready to move. 

It’s important to note, there is no penalty should your preferred apartment home become available before you are ready to move. If you decline, it’s simply offered to the next member on the list, and your priority list status remains the same.
