Rhode Island natives Norma and Maxwell Wolff (pictured here with Charlestown Sales Counselor Molly Fricker in the center) participated in Charlestown’s Live the Life program before moving to the Catonsville community.

Like test driving a new car or tasting the samples in a grocery store, most people enjoy the opportunity to try before they buy.

At Charlestown, those interested in the Catonsville, Md., Erickson Living community have a chance to do just that through its Live the Life program. The initiative gives prospective residents a firsthand look at the Charlestown lifestyle.

Live the Life gives Charlestown priority list members the opportunity to spend one or two complimentary nights in a well-appointed guest apartment home. Guests can enjoy cuisine in any of the community’s six on-site restaurants and access activities and amenities like the swimming pool and fitness center. During their stay, they also meet people who already call Charlestown home.

Self-guided tour

Guests work with Charlestown Sales Counselor Molly Fricker to customize their Live the Life experience based on their preferences and interests.

“It is relatively a self-guided experience,” says Fricker. “I usually meet with them on the day they arrive and arrange for them to join one of our resident ambassadors for dinner. Then, if they have specific things that interest them, I can make arrangements for them. Aside from that, they are free to explore the community on their own.”

For Rhode Island natives Norma and Maxwell Wolff, the Live the Life program was the deciding factor in choosing Charlestown as their new home.

“We had toured the community once when we were visiting our daughter, but this was a big move. We had to make sure we were making the right choice,” says Norma. “We wanted to experience what it was really like to live at Charlestown. During our stay, we were able to try all the restaurants, use the shuttle, we even went to an exercise class.”

Fricker says the Live the Life program is ideal for people like Norma and Maxwell, whose out-of-state location prevents them from attending regular events or dropping in occasionally to see what’s new.

“We have people come all the way from Michigan, Vermont, and New York. But we also have folks who live nearby in Columbia and Ellicott City who appreciate the opportunity to enjoy an extended stay,” says Bowman. “If you’re on the fence about moving, this is a great way to meet people who have already been through the process and can speak from experience and give you feedback about what it’s really like day in and day out.”

Well equipped for change

For Norma and Maxwell, those personal connections stuck with them.

“What stood out to us right away was how friendly the community was. As you walk around, everyone says hello to you. We talked to everyone we met and asked them, ‘What do you like about Charlestown? What’s good? What’s bad?’ It was a really good experience,” says Norma.

According to Fricker, the feedback regarding the Live the Life program has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Customers are telling us they had no idea how much they would enjoy life within the community. It also familiarizes people with the campus itself, which can be very helpful when it comes time to select the location of their apartment at Charlestown.”

As for Norma and Maxwell, they moved into their new apartment this January and hit the ground running.

“Within the first week of moving, I joined the Harmonizers singing group,” says Norma. “My husband plays with the bocce group and joined the softball team. Staying here those few nights really helped prepare us so that when we moved we were able to get involved with what interested us right away.”
